America is a nation of immigrants. Whether we are Jamaican-American or Chinese-American, German-American or Puerto Rican-American, we all pride ourselves on being American. Even so, we celebrate the homeland of our ancestors by sharing the food, holidays, and traditions from “the old country.”So from this nation of transplants, the Honors students at Cape Fear Community College have created this cookbook to celebrate the cultures and cuisines brought to this country by those who helped shape it – the everyday men and women who came from faraway places to pursue a prosperous life in the new world. Join us on this world-tour of ethnic holidays as we share family stories, tried-&-true recipes, and the cultural traditions of the diverse peoples of the USA. Enjoy Easter with the Sicilians, Diwali with the Indians, Christmas Eve with the Dominicans, Bastille Day with the French, St. Patrick’s Day with the Irish, and several more. Above all, we hope you appreciate the heritage and pageantry that began with our forefathers and has endured for generations in pursuit of the American Dream. This cookbook was authored by the Honors Statistical Methods class at Cape Fear Community College, and all proceeds with be donated to the Honors Program at CFCC.

Considered as a collaboration between students who want to tell the stories of their heritage, this cookbook is an enlightening view into the "Tastes and Traditions" of their cultures. (Was that too cheesy? Sorry. The recipe for coquitos turned out really, really well).The stories told at the beginning of each section grant a unique (and sometimes heart-rending) insight into each student's early life and their cultural traditions and family life - "This one's for you, abuelita." The recipes? I've traveled a LOT and the recipe for jerk chicken was as good as any island restaurant I've been to - a balanced blend of heat and spices that drew my roommates to the kitchen like hungry beggars. The coquitos, again, were amazing. I'm hard-pressed to find Puerto Ricans who make it better than this recipe.
All the gushing aside, I haven't had time to try all the recipes, but I have read most of the cookbook in hungry anticipation and this is what I've noticed:
Good stuff:
- The recipes are clear, mostly precise, and appear to be well balanced.
- Cooking times are reasonable and nothing seems terribly complex to a cooking novice like myself.
- The most expensive ingredient I've noticed is a vanilla bean. We low-budget people can breathe easy.
Other stuff:
- Keeping in mind that this is a student collaboration, it could use a little more editing. There were a few misspellings and one or two editor's markings left over. Nothing disruptive or bad, really. Just there.
- Footnotes in a cookbook? I'm not a scholar today. Just hungry and curious to learn your stories. ;)
Overall, a great read followed by delicious flavors. Well worth the couple bucks. A very solid four stars.

Not only great recipes, but good stories too.
Very interesting concept. We've enjoyed a number of meals using some of these recipes
I truly enjoyed "Tastes and Traditions". The student-authors have given the reader wonderful recipes from their various cultures along with their own very interesting personal stories. If world leaders could meet around a dining table and share foods from their cultures, as these student-authors have done, imagine the possibilities. I highly recommend "Tastes and Traditions"!
